Emma’s Fund was created to honor the courage, creativity, and compassion of Emma Soorikian, a beautiful soul who grew up in Decatur and adored working with children throughout her life. What is Emma’s Fund and How Does the Funding Work?
While battling such difficult obstacles herself, Emma worked tirelessly to use her remarkable talents to make a difference in the lives of others…particularly children. Her empathy, kindness, artistic creativity, and love of nature all found a perfect home at Camp Scene in Decatur, where Emma worked with children and created educational programming to raise awareness of the beauty and diversity of the natural world. The children there were a constant source of joy in her world.
Emma always expressed her deep and abiding belief that all kids, no matter their family’s means, should have access to creative, engaging after-school programs and day camps like Camp Scene. To honor Emma’s passion and commitment to this cause, her family created Emma’s Fund at DEF.
The fund will provide grants for children in Decatur to explore their passions and have experiences that would otherwise be unaffordable for their family. Priority will be given to scholarships for Camp Scene, but Emma’s Fund may also support other opportunities that allow kids to explore their interests and talents.
While Emma’s Fund was started by family and friends who knew and loved her, it is our hope that it will expand to include funding from a variety of sources to create an ever-expanding ripple of positive impact in the lives of children throughout our community.
